Le jardin Jean Massart de l’ULB est un microcosme riche en espèces végétales et animales (insectes), un véritable sanctuaire de biodiversité. Alain DRUMONT et Patrick GROOTAERT y ont découvert une nouvelle espèce de mouche, et c’est un événement rare : la dernière remonte à une vingtaine d’années ! La nouvelle mouche a été baptisée Drapetis bruscellensis.
Comment conduit-on ces recherches ? Comment se fit la découverte ? Quels sont les caractères de cette mouche ? Et des Drapetis en général…
C’est le moment de reparler de la taxonomie, cette science qui a la réputation d’être passée. Elle n’a rien perdu de son importance : photo du grand buisson du vivant, elle permet de décrire l’état du vivant …ou de nos connaissances (nettement plus limitées) d’icelui. Ses résultats, basés sur des approches comparatives de critères physiques (forme des ailes, couleurs des pattes, etc.) sont à recouper avec ceux des approches génétiques. Elle permet de comprendre comment, avec le changement climatique, la « barrière » nordique remonte et des espèces nouvelles venues de plus au sud s’implantent sous nos latitudes…
L’évolution « des espèces » est aussi celle des biotopes. On ne trouve cette mouche que dans ce jardin qui existe depuis un siècle environ. Ce biotope très dense aurait-il constitué une pression de sélection en faveur d’une telle mouche ? Voilà une question qui mérite d’autres recherches !
