Patrice Cani et son équipe étudient le microbiote intestinal (anciennement appelé la flore intestinale) : 1500 milliards de microorganismes peuplant notre intestin (soit dix fois plus que d’étoiles dans notre Galaxie) ! Ils sont en interaction, émettent des signaux biochimiques, eux-mêmes en interaction avec l’ensemble de notre organisme : avec les différents organes, le système immunitaire, les système nerveux central et même le cerveau !
Ainsi notre intestin produit davantage de sérotonine que n’en émet le cerveau ! Des expériences menées sur des souris au laboratoire montrent que leur comportement varie selon l’état de leur microbiote !
De même pour certaines affections comme par exemple le diabète de type II, qui apparaît lorsqu’on consomme pendant trop longtemps trop de graisse. L’équilibre des populations bactériennes en est modifié. Ici, la population d’Ackermansia muciniphilla diminue, qui semble avoir un rôle actif dans la qualité des mucines tapissant l’intestin (les mucines forment un mucus constituant une barrière active qui empêche le contact des bactéries avec nos propres cellules, tout en laissant passer leurs métabolites).
Ceci ouvre des pistes thérapeutiques intéressantes tant pour des affections physiologiques (obésité, diabète) que psychologiques (dépression).
Mais il y a plus. On a découvert que tous les humains sont divisés en trois catégories d’entérobiotes (ce qu’on appelle les entérotypes), et que ces trois groupes ne coïncident avec aucun critère de regroupement connu (type d’alimentation, poids, habitude alimentaire, groupe sanguin, origine, culture…)
Notre système immunitaire est capable de moduler les équilibres de nos populations bactériennes, avec des effets-retours sur notre physiologie, notre santé !
Enfin, de nouvelles techniques d’analyse génétique— la métagénomique, qui consiste à analyser l’ADN de l’ensemble des microorganismes (pris comme un tout) présents dans un éco-système donné — laissent à penser que nous portons aussi en nous des bactéries encore inconnues…
Bref, l’exploration de ce monde immense que nous trimballons tous sans le savoir ne fait que commencer, elle promet d’être passionnante.
